kurimanzutto gallery is expanding to New York to spread its artistic goals beyond the northern border, with Mexico as its center—and not the other way around.
“Mexico is the center and New York feeds on it. I think that politically that is interesting, because to a greater extent it works the other way around: New York is always the center of the art world and it radiates from there; for us, Mexico is the center that opens up and extends to New York,” emphasizes José Kuri in an interview from the Iron City.
In 1999, José Kuri and Mónica Manzutto founded the gallery that merges their surnames, today considered one of the most important in the world. Its origins were nomadic, since it started without permanent facilities but it later settled in the San Miguel Chapultepec neighborhood, where it will alternate with the New York gallery with a program that complements and dialogues with the one presented in Mexico.
The recently opened show at 520 West 20th Street, entitled Todos juntos [All Together], evokes a principle of the gallery since its origins: mutual understanding.
