gabriel orozco | chapultepec: nature and culture

"Chapultepec is being developed as a great cultural and environmental campus so that it can begin to be inhabited by its users; instead of being impacted, we managed to lift the forest out of its stagnation.” —Gabriel Orozco

With great honor we congratulate Gabriel Orozco on the recent inauguration of the Chapultepec Nature and Culture project in Mexico City. For nearly six years, Orozco created the master plan and coordinated the works for Chapultepec Forest, one of the most iconic urban parks in the world.

Chapultepec is an emblematic urban forest located in the heart of Mexico City. Its origins date back to pre-Hispanic times, and for over five centuries, it has been the setting for crucial moments in Mexico’s history.

During this period, Orozco coordinated and worked with a team of national and international experts in environmental restoration, urban infrastructure, history, engineering, archaeology, architecture, landscaping, and gardening, as well as a group of volunteers who dedicated their commitment and creativity to bring this ambitious project to life.

In 2019, after the decision was made to transform a 100 hectare military field (which was slated for privatization) into a Fourth Section for Chapultepec, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador invited artist Gabriel Orozco to conceive a Master Plan for Chapultepec Forest.

The Master Plan conceived by Gabriel Orozco and his team is guided by the principles of permaculture, which include care for the earth, care for people, and fair distribution. In line with these principles, the proposal is ecologically respectful, socially responsible, and economically viable. Chapultepec: Nature and Culture reaffirms the park’s original purpose as a spring and public forest, significantly enriching all its layers; it enhances its environmental potential by strengthening and expanding its green areas, and doubles its cultural offerings, diversifying its public spaces.

The following projects have recently been opened to the public:

- Urban Culture Park (Parcur)

- Cineteca Nacional Chapultepec

- Dolores Cemetery

- Environmental Culture Center

- Pavilion and Scenic Garden

- Clausell Park and the Rabbit’s Passage

- Snakes and Ladders Circuit

- National Art Warehouse

- Former Gunpowder Factory

- Vasco de Quiroga Chapel

- Two Floating Walkways, Cablebús Line 3

“It is unthinkable to have political art if it is not ecological; one of the political reasons for art is its commitment to environmental culture and addressing climate change.” —Gabriel Orozco
