miguel calderón - available aesthetic matter

Available Aesthetic Matter is an exhibition that gives a reading of three decades of production by the Mexican artist Miguel Calderón (Mexico City, 1971). A key figure in the development of the alternative art scene of the nineties in the country, his work gives us access to the unique character that Mexico City offered and reveals different dimensions of a society of exacerbated contradictions. In a non-linear journey, this selection of work allows us to visualise the development of aesthetic mechanisms between humour and fiction, as a binding form that opens up profound conversations in which Calderón interweaves recurring themes, paradoxes and contradictions inherent to everyday life.

The exhibition establishes a direct dialogue with complex aspects of Mexican society: violence, corruption, sexuality and the dynamics of different social strata. This group of works narrates the experiences that accompanied the production of the pieces, together with the mark they first left on the artist's life, to transcend into a discursive style, in a sort of conscious existentialism, but far removed from emotional ties and dramatisms. In this way, Calderón and his work go beyond the biographical dimension of his narratives and become themes that participate in the ontological questioning of human beings and their dynamics.
