As part of The Office of Inter-American Affairs Presents, Ana Segovia’s first solo exhibition at kurimanzutto New York, we present a live conversation between the artist and Professor of Art History and Archaeology Julia Bryan-Wilson.
The conversation will examine how Segovia’s work invites a critical reconsideration of the ways visual culture can produce and reinforce idealized hegemonic representations. It will also engage with queer theory and notions of queerness, exploring how these frameworks can destabilize normative constructions of gender, embodiment, and desire.

Julia Bryan-Wilson is a writer, critic, editor and Professor of Contemporary Art and LGBTQ+ Studies and core faculty in Columbia's Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender. Her research interests include feminist and queer theory, theories of artistic labor, performance and dance, production/fabrication, craft histories, photography, video, visual culture of the nuclear age, and collaborative practices.
Ana Segovia produces images through paintings that subvert the heteronormativity of popular imaginaries. The artist revisits mythical scenes and figures from industries like film, reconfiguring their hegemonic role as idealized models of masculinity. He intervenes in their forms, alters their tonalities, and dislocates them, and it’s in this disruption where he reveals the montage, artifice, and the performativity in constructing gender and national identities.
