Haegue Yang's Contingent Spheres in Encounters
Project by Alexie Glass-Kantor featuring sixteen large scale projects under the theme: “I am a part of all that I have met.”
Haegue Yang uses weaving as an intermediary for compositing divergent times and places, often merging ethnic craft and modern industrial production. Through hybrid forms, Yang unfolds a myriad of evocative references, from mythic narratives, spiritualities, and syncretic ritual cultures.
In Contingent Spheres, Yang synthesises together three works: The Randing Intermediates – Underbelly Alienage Duo and The Intermediate – Five-Legged Frosty Fecund Imoogi, are presented on flooring referential to the Binakol, a Filipino textile which represents waves, and for the Indigenous peoples of the Cordilleras, is believed to provide protection against malevolent spirits.
Sonic Cosmic Rope – Gold Dodecagon Straight Weave evokes the Korean folk- tale of Sister Sun and Brother Moon’s heavenly escape. Its thick cords of metallic bells descend from the ceiling, signalling celestial transcendence and latent ener- gy. Intermittently activated by the facilitators, her sonic sculpture emits a rattling sound that reverberates throughout the cosmos.
