Abraham Cruzvillegas is the artistic director of the first edition of the Bienal de Yucatán 2026, titled Vocal. It is dedicated to reflecting on language, languages, and multiple forms of communication.
From 26 November 2026 to 28 February 2027, Yucatán will host the first edition of Bienal de Yucatán, a newly conceived initiative emerging from south-eastern Mexico. Following the format of an international contemporary art festival, the biennial will bring together national and international artists in an unprecedented gathering.
Spanning three months and offering free access to all audiences, Bienal de Yucatán arises from the recognition of a vibrant, diverse, and constantly evolving local artistic scene, as well as from the need to strengthen processes of professionalisation, visibility, and articulation of contemporary art in the south-eastern region of the country, under standards of excellence in its presentation.
Today, Mérida offers an exceptional setting to host this project: a territory where the richness of living Maya culture, tangible historical heritage, and a growing infrastructure of cultural centres, venues, and universities coexist. Within this fertile environment, the Bienal seeks to build bridges between communities, generations, and diverse geographies.
